Houston, TX (Onsite 3-5 days/week)

About the Role:
Our client is seeking a hands-on, technically strong Director of Software Development to lead and evolve our internal and offshore development teams. Reporting to senior leadership, you'll drive the ongoing transformation of our core platform and applications through thoughtful reimplementation and integration efforts. This is not a greenfield environment-your experience modernizing and evolving legacy systems in structured phases will be critical.

This role is ideal for a seasoned technologist who came up through development, thrives in a multi-tier web application environment, and enjoys leading high-performing teams while staying close to the technology.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead a cross-functional software development organization of 30-40 people (including contractors and offshore teams), overseeing development

• Provide technical leadership to a core team of ~10 onsite developers.

• Guide phased modernization efforts-support live environments while planning API updates, platform integrations, and technology migrations.

• Manage complex third-party vendor integrations and enhancements to subscription-based systems.

• Drive efforts to decouple from legacy systems, including reducing dependency on Salesforce.

• Collaborate with senior leadership to align technology decisions with business goals.

• Foster a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement within the dev team.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field required.

• Must have started as a developer and grown into leadership-this is a technical director role, not just people management.

• Proven experience managing multi-tiered web applications and large-scale development teams.

• Strong background in PHP, Python, JavaScript, MySQL, RabbitMQ, and API integration.

• Experience working with hybrid teams (onshore and offshore) and managing software delivery across multiple time zones.

• Comfortable working onsite in Houston at least 3 days/week (preference for 5).

• Previous experience modernizing platforms in a phased, non-greenfield setting is strongly preferred
