Description:
Linux Platform Engineer (OpenSUSE / Systems & Network Infrastructure)
Our client, a leader in Insurance, is seeking a skilled Linux Platform Engineer with deep expertise in OpenSUSE-based environments to support mission-critical infrastructure. This role will focus on system administration, network configuration, and hardware integration across Linux-based platforms.
Responsibilities
- Administer, configure, and optimize OpenSUSE Linux servers in production environments
- Manage system performance, patching, security hardening, and automation
- Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls, routing, DNS, DHCP, VPN)
- Perform hardware-level diagnostics and support integration of Linux OS with physical and virtual infrastructure
- Implement best practices around system redundancy, load balancing, storage, and high availability
- Automate operational tasks using shell scripting, Python, or Ansible
- Monitor system health, logs, and alerts to ensure high uptime and rapid incident resolution
- Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on infrastructure scaling, upgrades, and performance improvements
- Support disaster recovery strategies and backup integrity validation
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Linux system engineering or administration
- Hands-on OpenSUSE experience is REQUIRED
- Deep understanding of Linux OS internals, kernel tuning, and performance optimization
- Strong command-line expertise with bash/shell scripting
- Solid background in network fundamentals and troubleshooting
- Experience working with bare metal and virtualized environments (VMware, KVM, Proxmox, etc.)
- Familiarity with monitoring tools (Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, etc.)
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, and escalation discipline
- Ability to work with minimal supervision in fast-paced, production-critical environments
Bonus Experience
- Ansible, Terraform, or orchestration/automation tools
- Experience with DevOps pipelines or CI/CD
- Knowledge of security compliance frameworks and hardened systems
- Experience supporting industrial, embedded, or edge computing environments
This role is onsite centrally in Houston, TX.
